Maybelline Superstay Matte Lip Ink – Swatches & Review

So far, 2018 has been the year of the liquid lipstick for me. Although it’s a product trend that’s been around for a few years, I guess I’m somewhat of a lipstick traditionalist. And to be honest, it takes awhile to master the perfect liquid lip.

But the new Maybelline Superstay Matte Lip Inks are probably the best long wear liquid lipstick I’ve ever tried from the drugstore, and competes with some of the higher end formulas that cost twice as much. Plus, the pointy tip applicator makes it easy to get the perfect shape.

Let’s dive in!

Formula

DANG these suckers are hard to get off. Even as I was doing the swatches, I had to really scrub and use a combination of coconut oil and makeup wipes.

On the lips, these are just as long-wearing, albeit a tad drying. They go on in thin, ultra-pigmented layers and have a smooth, paint-like texture. They dry fast and once they do – they’re staying on for the long haul.

The only downside of the formula is that they’re pretty drying so they may emphasize lines and cracks in your lips. Just make sure you prep your lips beforehand – scrub, balm, and tissue off. I do this before applying any liquid lipstick.

I don’t find that they flake or go patchy throughout the day which is a huge win.

Because they are so drying, they aren’t the most comfortable to wear but I’m no stranger to the feeling of “lipstick on” that I don’t mind it.

Overall, the formula does what it says. It’s matte, it has crazy long staying power, and is pigmented and smooth kinda like ink.

Shades

These babies come in 20 shades – 10 from the original collection and 10 from the new “un-nude” collection. The “Un-Nude” range may have a confusing name but basically includes a spectrum from truly natural nudes to a deep dark brown. It also includes a gorgeous lilac, purple, and grey. I think the purple and lilac shades stretch the definition of “nude” but since this collection is titled “UN-Nude” I suppose they can get away with it.

Although I love the names, the idea isn’t exactly original. The Girl Lip Stylo by Hourglass have very similar names, even some of the same names (Visionary, Creator, Protector). I’m not sure how companies get away with that but I like the names so I’m still buyin’.

But I digress…I have 4 shades (and counting) – 3 from the un-nude collection and 1 from the original collection.

Price

At $9.49 a pop, these are definitely worth the coin. Let’s compare. The Anastasia liquid lipsticks clock in at $20. Same for my high-end faves – Kat Von D. Kylie’s matte liquid lipsticks are $17.

At the budget end of the spectrum, ColourPop’s liquid lippies are only $6.50. NYX soft matte lip creams will run you $6.49.

If you purchase these at Ulta, there’s a good chance you can pick them up with a bogo 50% promo. These are so popular that many are out of stock right now but between Ulta and Target, I was able to get my hands on the shades I wanted.

I find these to be more long-wearing than Nyx and Anastasia’s liquid lipsticks. They are more drying but unless you wear them every single day, it’s not too bad.

Overall

I give these an A- and would definitely recommend. Even if you’re not a lipstick junkie like myself, you’ll find plenty of nude and wearable shades in the range and the little applicator makes them easier to apply than just about any other liquid lippie I’ve ever tried.

Has anyone else out there tried these yet? Comment below with your favorite shade or if you want me to review any other drugstore liquid lips.

Stay fabulous all you visionaries, creators, rulers and amazonians. <3
